Learning Support
At Prestatyn High School we pride ourselves on being an Inclusive school and believe that all pupils have the right to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum.
The Learning Support Team consists of a group of highly qualified and dedicated teachers and teaching assistants who support pupils with difficulties in a variety of ways;

1. Y6 pupils – to aid transition our SENCo will meet with primary SENCos.  Pupils who we believe will benefit most are invited to join our Extended Transition Programme in the Summer Term before they start at Prestatyn High School.

2. A large team of teaching assistants (TAs) provide support in mainstream lessons ensuring all pupils can access the curriculum.

3. Pupils’ details are placed on an SEN register and Individual Education Plans are drawn up for them. Parents and contact staff are made aware of a pupil’s IEP and these are reviewed regularly.   

4. Some KS3 pupils are withdrawn from mainstream English and/or mathematics lessons to receive small group support in these core subjects.

5. We provide pupils with attainable KS4 courses; e.g. L1 and L2 KeySkills.

6. Some pupils are withdrawn during registration for; Catch Up Literacy (reading programme)Successmaker computer program (for support with spelling / reading / numeracy).

7.  Some pupils attend our ‘Circle of Friends’ group before school and at breaks and lunchtimes. This group encourages pupils to develop their social skills in a secure environment.

8.  From September 2014 we will be launching our NEW Nurture Group Provision, to support low ability pupils with social and emotional difficulties. Pupils will be taught in a small group setting for approximately 50% of their timetable working on similar curriculum content to their peers but with a greater emphasis on promoting self esteem and confidence, encouraging appropriate social skills and working on organisational skills.

We are fortunate to have lots of Additional Learning Needs expertise within our team and we are able to provide individual support to pupils and ongoing in-house training for staff in the following areas;
  • Specific Learning Difficulties (e.g. Dyslexia, Dyscalculia)
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder
  • Physical Disabilities
  • Speech, Language and Communication
  • Catch Up Literacy
  • Learning Coaches (e.g. assist pupils with Y9 options and Y10 work experience placements)
  • Student Assistance Programme (for pupils with emotional difficulties)
  • ICT support (e.g. Write on Line, Successmaker, BKSB)
  • Medical support from school nurse / first aiders
  • Student Support Team – to support pupils’ pastoral needs
We also have close links with external agencies who regularly attend our school to support our pupils;
  • Educational Psychology Service
  • Speech and Language Therapy Service
  • Sensory Support Service
  • Physiotherapy Service
  • Behaviour Support Service
  • Outreach support from local Special Schools  

We regularly liaise with parents on their child’s progress and recognise the importance of developing positive home / school links in working together to ensure that all pupils reach their full potential.    
Homework 
 
Homework is set regularly in accordance with the school’s homework policy. Tasks are individual to each pupil, are paper based and are linked to our Successmaker Computer Program to reinforce literacy and numeracy classwork.  Tasks are short and manageable and help pupils to develop their organisational skills by taking the sheet home, completing it with parental support, and returning it to school by the deadline.
